Which department do I go to? A symptom-to-clinic guide
In Japan you usually choose the department yourself, which is confusing at first. Here's a simple map.
Common departments
- Internal medicine (内科 / naika) — fever, a cold or flu, upset stomach, general illness, chronic conditions. Like a GP or generalist. When in doubt, start here.
- Pediatrics (小児科 / shōnika) — children (the kids' doctor).
- ENT (耳鼻咽喉科 / jibiinkōka) — ear, nose, throat, sinus, dizziness.
- Orthopedics (整形外科 / seikeigeka) — the bone and joint doctor: bones, joints, sprains, back/neck pain.
- Dermatology (皮膚科 / hifuka) — the skin doctor: skin, rashes, acne, hair, nails.
- Ophthalmology (眼科 / ganka) — the eye doctor.
- Gynecology (婦人科 / fujinka) — women's health (OB-GYN).
- Psychosomatic / Psychiatry (心療内科 / 精神科) — stress, sleep, low mood, anxiety, mental health.
- Dentistry (歯科 / shika) — the dentist: teeth.
Simple rule
If you're not sure, start at an internal medicine clinic — they treat most everyday problems and point you to the right specialist if needed. Still unsure which department fits your symptom? Tell us on LINE and we'll point you the right way.
Emergency
Severe or sudden symptoms (chest pain, trouble breathing, one-sided weakness) are not a "which department" question — call 119, or #7119 if unsure.
Not sure where to go for your symptom and area? A doctor will help you find the right place — message us on LINE.
