Prescriptions and pharmacies

Most clinics give you a prescription (処方箋) to fill at a separate pharmacy (薬局), often right nearby. Keep a medicine record book (お薬手帳) — it tracks what you take and helps avoid interactions.

Over the counter

Drugstores sell many OTC medicines (cold, pain, stomach) without a prescription. Pharmacists can advise you for free. But stronger medicines and antibiotics need a doctor.

Bringing medication into Japan

Some medicines that are normal abroad are restricted in Japan (certain cold/allergy meds, strong painkillers, ADHD and some psychiatric drugs). For larger amounts or controlled drugs you may need advance permission (a "Yakkan Shoumei"). Check the official rules before you travel.

Tip

Carry medicines in original packaging with a copy of your prescription and a note of generic (ingredient) names.

処方箋と薬局

多くのクリニックは処方箋を出し、近くの調剤薬局で薬を受け取ります。お薬手帳を持つと、服用歴が分かり飲み合わせを防げます。

市販薬

ドラッグストアでは多くの市販薬（風邪・痛み・胃腸）が処方箋なしで買えます。薬剤師に無料で相談可。ただし強い薬や抗菌薬は医師の処方が必要。

薬の持ち込み

海外では普通でも日本では規制される薬があります（一部の風邪・アレルギー薬、強い鎮痛薬、ADHDや一部の向精神薬）。多量や規制薬は事前許可（薬監証明など）が要ることも。渡航前に公式ルールを確認。

薬は元の包装のまま、処方箋の控えと一般名（成分名）のメモを添えて持参を。
